A Letter to Myself

G

She grew up pure and simple, discreet

  C                                      G

No noises were heard from her crib

   C                                                  G

She learned all their ways through the love in their eyes

              D                         F#m

and asked nothing in return but a rib

    G

But time is a tickler and a teller of tales

  C                                   G

and all one can do is survive

            C                                          G

So with nothing but passion with desire that’s clashing

  D                                       F#m

Convincing her life will arrive

  G

She took little steps forward so swift

No one could see she was gone

They were too busy with their life in the city

With no time for a girl who’s withdrawn

[Chorus]

            D                              C

I wish someone had told her as she walked away

            C                          G

We all play the parts we portray

G                                          C

If we hope to get better, we’d best write a letter

   D                                                  G

to ourselves and believe what we say

The road is a place many people have been

but for her it was new and unknown

the same old sun shined; the same old wind blew

but she couldn’t see how much she had grown

Her face was all dirty and her hair was a mess

but she didn’t mind she could see

a curve up ahead into a forest and herds

of people who were all living free

She was making good time and getting their quick

with the wind at her back she could sail

Then without warning she turned away from the morning

and went west, determined to fail

[Chorus]

As she headed west racing the sun

guided by blindness and pride

she thought of the people praying under that steeple

guided by blindness and pride

Change is a stranger and he steels from his friends

she met him when she was too young

to appreciate value and how he tells you how to

live without holding your tongue

So when I asked her softly while lying in bed

to tell me what she’s going through

her eyes told a story of travel and glory

and she waved and away she then flew

[Chorus]
